When David went out to face Goliath he bent down and picked up 5 smooth stones (1 Samuel 17:40). Ever wonder what reason David decided to pick up more than just the 1 stone he needed to win victory over Goliath? A very specific reason lies behind why David did this and ill tell you why here. First, lets discuss the setting and what God wants us to learn from this well known bible story that’s something more than just the best underdog story of all time.

Facing Overwhelming Fear & Odds

Goliath was a fierce warrior from Gath who stood over 9 feet tall. He wore a helmet and armor weighing 125 pounds. His legs covered with shin guards of bronze and a javelin strapped to his back to match the rest of his armor with a spear weighing 15 pounds completed his gear for battle. As Goliath stood in the valley he shouted to the people of Israel with a challenge to choose a man to fight him with the winner deciding whose people would ultimately serve the other. He was defying the ranks of Israel.

David was the youngest of eight sons. To his brothers he was just a little kid who came around to embarrass them to which they would always attempt to send him home. David, by a twist of fate, arrives to the Israelite camp just in time to hear Goliaths challenge for the men of Israel. David’s response was “who is this Philistine that challenges to armies of the Living God?” He demanded (1 Samuel 17:26). Eventually he would offer to fight Goliath in a conversation with Saul. David had faith the Lord would deliver him from defeat from Goliath.

The Battle: David vs. Goliath

We all know David defeated Goliath with only a slingshot by firing a stone to Goliath’s forehead killing him and delivering the people of Israel from bondage to the Philistines. As exciting and as this story is, there is so much more laying hidden beneath the surface.

Spiritual Warfare | Gods Purpose Behind Stories of Triumph

We are to learn a lesson from stories such as this knowing they were orchestrated in such a way to uncover the truth about God. What are parables? The word Parable defined means to lay along side. We can discard the truth of such historical events but instead choose to gain another level of understanding. Parables represent something or someone else. In this example, Goliath can be seen as Satan~Saul as people lacking faith~David as people living by the Spirit.

Intimidated By the Power of Satan

Forty in the Bible is the number of testing and shows us that living in the flesh, all the world and all it has to offer, we will always fail against the enemy. As David shows us, not even all the armor Goliath possessed was enough protection and instead made him less effective in battle by immobilizing him.

Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of the dark world, and against the forces of Heavenly realms (Ephesians 6:12)

David was awkward and just a young boy, but armed with the strength of the Lord he was more than just an easy opponent for Goliath.

Not by might, nor by power, but by My Spirit says the Lord Almighty (Zechariah 4:6)

Gaining Wisdom From Every Situation

Parables are heavenly stories put into an earthly perspective. To achieve wisdom from parables simply put everything back into the spiritual realm. By doing this we realize we have the same logic behind our faith as David did for his before the battle.

The Lord has already defeated His enemy and ours (Colossians 2:15)

God cannot complete what we are promised if we are defeated by our enemy in this world. It is impossible for faith and fear to exist in our mind both at the same time. Hand over everything you face in your life to God.

Fear vs. Faith ~ 4 steps to Defeating Fear with Faith

  1. Go Deeper: discover more than surface level information by finding the meaning behind what lies beneath.
  2. Refuse To Be Intimidated: don’t live for this world but realize the battle exists within the spirit realm and not the physical here on earth. The battle witching your mind.
  3. Be Relentless in Gaining Wisdom From Every Situation You Face: Put everything back into the spiritual realm. The Lord has already won the battles you face.
  4. Decide to give everything back to God

Conclusion~So why 5 stones Instead of 1?

As we discussed, parables are meant to be more than surface level and teach us more by finding what lies beneath. So why did David take 5 stones instead 1? He knew Goliath had 4 brothers!
